The Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America provides programs for youth development. The program is year-round with a variety of activities for youth. Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing and Exploring offer youth the opportunities to develop physically, mentally and socially. Fees are $7.00 per year with unlimited scholarships based on need. Youth may join through a local neighborhood organization or by contacting the Blue Ridge Council Office.

Camp Opportunity, Inc. provides recreational and esteem-building activities to abused and neglected children. Round-trip transportation to activity sites is provided from central locations such as the Department of Social Service parking lot. Enrollment capacity is 80 children for the overnight camp. The camp is free for those youth under protective custody by the Department of Social Service.
Programs include a week-long summer residential camp for six to ten-year-olds, three teen weekend retreats per calendar year, outings, holiday parties, clothes closet, tutoring and mentoring programs, and Christmas sponsorships.

The Child Development & Family Learning Center of Greer addresses poverty-related problems in Sunnyside Neighborhood. A year-round program of activities is offered for children of all ages. Opportunities are provided for storytelling, reading, listening, games and playtime. The Family & Child Development Center provides health and human services for residents of southern Greenville and northern Laurens county. A year-round health and human services program is offered. Additional programs include drama classes, job assistance, classes to end family violence, victim services, family-planning immunization, disability services, emergency relief, literacy partnership, GED and a kindergarten for four-year-olds. Most programs are offered free of charge. The center also offers child care for children six-months to three-years-old.

The Family Effect works to reduce addiction as the leading cause of family collapse
and harm to children in the Upstate. Addiction in the home creates more abused
and neglected kids, more unprepared first graders and more high school dropouts
than any other single root cause. We raise money and recruit volunteers for effective,
research-based programs at The Phoenix Center of Greenville that focus on children
and families. We offer both residential and outpatient programs for kids and
teens and mothers of young children.

The National Dropout Prevention Network works to improve school experience of students in at-risk situations and thereby decrease America's dropout rate. A year-round program is offered and services include an internationally-recognized organization integrating a research center, information clearinghouse and membership network. The Network was created in 1987 in response to a large number of youth dropping out of school. The Network provides services for practitioners and policy-makers and fosters linkages among educators, community leaders, researchers, parents and the private sector. Services also include alternative interventions, professional development, information and partnerships.

The Old 96 Girl Scout Council serves 6,500 girls in Greenville, Abbeville, Anderson, Greenwood, Laurens, Pickens and Oconee counties. Program services are designed to inspire girls, ages 15 through 17, with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism and service so they will become happy and resourceful citizens.
Troop leaders oversee the application process. Girls may join a troop or participate individually. An annual membership fee is $7.00.

The shelter provides emergency housing for children who are dependent and displaced due to abuse, neglect, family crisis or abandonment. The Phillis Wheatley Association provides a comprehensive program designed to meet the educational, health, nutritional and social needs of youth. The Big Brother and Big Sister Programs pair up children from single parent homes with a mentor. Other programs include activities to promote youth development skills, leadership programs and a repertory theater for youth. Safe Harbor, Inc. offers emergency shelter, counseling, case management, and related services to victims of domestic violence and their children. Crisis counseling is available 24 hours through the Shelter Crisis Line. The Safe Harbor Megan Project is a date abuse curriculum taught by staff in area high schools, churches and youth groups. Community education is provided to help stop domestic violence through providing speakers to groups. Greenville, Pickens and Oconee counties are in the service area of the program. There is no charge for the speakers that are provided to various groups in the area.

Financial Aid
Please pay close attention to the application deadlines that are listed. The colleges and scholarship committees must have all material necessary to complete the application process by the deadline which includes the sections completed by your counselor, your transcript and letters of recommendations when needed. Please give close consideration to this and make sure you allow time for the official documentation to be completed before the deadlines.

LIFE Scholarship
Offered to students in SC that meet eligibility requirements: A U.S. Citizen or permanent resident, a legal resident of the State of South Carolina, not convicted of any felonies or alcohol/drug related convictions, must not be a Palmetto Fellow recipient, be a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student, attend an eligible South Carolina public or private college or university, enroll in an eligible institution within two years and three months of high school graduation, graduated from high school or completed a home school program as prescribed by Law on or after May 1995, must not be in default, owe a refund, or repayment on Federal or State financial aid.

Minors under age 14
Usually not authorized however, exemptions from this restriction apply under the following specific circumstances:
Minors under age 14 may work in any aspect of show business, such as acting or performing in a theatrical, television, radio, or film production.
Minors age 12 and 13 may work during non school sessions in nonhazardous farm jobs with written parental consent. Minors age 12 and 13 may engage in farm labor at any agricultural establishment at which the minor's parents are employed.
At any age, minors may work in any business or establishment which is owned and operated by the parent of the minor.
At any age, minors may deliver newspapers to consumers.
Minors age 14 and 15
Work with prescribed scheduling restrictions. (Non school sessions are defined as summer vacation, Christmas vacation, spring break, and weekends.) Normal school sessions include all days in which the school observes a standard academic calendar.
During normal school sessions, minors may work a maximum of three hours per day, up to eighteen hours per week. Work hours must fall between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. So, the work schedule will be between 3:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. since that time falls after school.
During non school sessions, minors may work up to eight hours per day, 40 hours per week. Work hours must fall between 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Appropriate employment may include, but is not limited to: cashiering, serving food, custodial duties, bussing tables, car washing, and delivery work not involving the operation of a motor vehicle.
Minors may not engage in the following work activities: warehousing and storage, car repair, public utility duties, work involving the use of ladders or scaffolding, work involving food preparation, the use of grinders, the operation of lawnmower and golf carts, or anything deemed hazardous.

Minors age 16 to 18
Minors age 16 and older are exempt from the hour and scheduling restrictions.
These minors may work as many daily and weekly hours as the job responsibilities require or the employer requests.
Minors age 16 to 18 may not engage in any occupation deemed hazardous.
Over 18
No jurisdiction is established in the enforcement of child labor laws for employees who are age 18 or older.

Driver's License
15 years old Conditional/Provisional License
You need to have a beginner's permit for at least 90 days, then you will be eligible for a conditional/provisional license. To get a conditional/provisional license, you must bring your parent or legal guardian to your local DMV. At that time, you submit certification of a driver education course and certification of satisfactory school attendance. Then you must successfully complete the vision and skills test.
A conditional/provisional license allows you to drive unaccompanied during daylight hours from 6:00a.m.- 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. during daylight-saving time. For night driving, after 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. during daylights savings time until midnight, a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age, with at least a year's driving experience, must accompany you. You can only drive between midnight and 6:00a.m. if you are accompanied with a licensed parent or legal guardian.
16 years old Special Restricted License
You need to have a beginner's permit for at least 90 days, then you will be eligible for a
special restricted license. To get a special restricted license, you must bring your parent or
legal guardian to your local DMV. Then you must successfully complete the vision and skill tests.

If the time limitations for a special restricted license cause problems for you at your job or school, they can be waived. Both statements must give the reason for the waiver.
17 years old Driver's License
You need to have a beginner's permit for at least 90 days, then you will be eligible for a regular South Carolina Driver's License with no time restrictions. To get a regular driver's license, you must bring your parent or legal guardian to your local DMV. Then you must successfully complete the vision and skill tests.
18 years old or older Driver's License
Drivers 18 or older may obtain a South Carolina driver's license after having a beginner's permit for at least 90 days and by successfully completing the vision and skills tests. The cost is $12.50 for the license.

You must be 18 years old, an US citizen, and registered to vote before going to the polls. All registrations must be completed 30 days prior to Election Day.
To be eligible to register in South Carolina you must: Be a United States citizen; Be at least 18 years old on or before the election; Be a resident of South Carolina, this county and precinct; Not be under a court order declaring you mentally incompetent; Not be confined in any public prison resulting from a conviction of a crime; Have never been convicted of a felony or offense against the election laws
