Business License Tax Abatement

The City of Greenville is a prime location for businesses that make the local economy more relevant to leading trends in the world economy, and the tax abatement program is designed to facilitate business growth in targeted areas and throughout the city. A tax abatement is a reduction of or exemption from taxes for a specified length of time, and the abatement amount is based on the time of year that a business commences operations in the city of Greenville (see Abatement Schedule below).

The business license tax abatement is for new businesses only, and businesses must meet certain criteria in order to qualify for the abatement. Qualifying businesses include Corporate Headquarters, Manufacturing, Research & Development and High Technology Growth businesses. Abatement Schedule:

The abatement amounts for eligible businesses opening between January 1 and June 30 are:

100% for the first taxable year or portion thereof
66% for the second year
33% for the third year

The abatement amounts for eligible businesses opening between July 1 and December 31 are:

July 1-December 31:

100% for the first taxable year or portion thereof
100% for the second year
50% for the third year

Qualifying Businesses:
In addition to the qualifying businesses listed above, certain types of businesses that locate in designated areas of the city are also eligible for the business license tax abatement. There are four designated areas within the city and eligible businesses include Retail, Artists and Professional Services.
