New Trail Plans

The City is proposing two new trails to provide connectivity from Main Street to the Greenville Zoo and extend the Sliding Rock Creek Trail in the Nicholtown community. Both projects were recommended in the City’s Trails and Greenways Master Plan.

To gauge community interest, the City is hosting a public meeting for each proposed trail to discuss the project and give attendees an opportunity to ask questions and provide input.

Zoo Trail Phase 1

This ½-mile trail would connect David C Francis Street to E Washington Street via an abandoned rail bed that runs behind the Greenville Zoo. The 12-foot asphalt trail would be similar to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and would likely be branded as the Zoo Trail Spur, with zoo-related art and iconography. A long-term goal is to create a pedestrian entrance to the zoo from the trail.

The project would also include a natural surface trail that would tie the Zoo Trail Spur into Cleveland Park, near the parking area at the intersection of Cleveland Park Drive and Lakehurst Street. This secondary trail would be approximately 1,000 feet long and 8 feet wide.

Sliding Rock Phase 2

This project is an extension of the 1.3-mile Sliding Rock Creek Trail in the Nicholtown community, which was created in 2018. The new 1-mile single track natural surface hike/bike trail would connect with the existing trail near Clark Street, and could include built elements for mountain bike use such as skinnies, ramps, flow runs, bridges and banks. This project would provide a natural surface connection within Nicholtown and could eventually lead to a connection to the Laurens Road corridor via Webster Road.
