City to Hold Groundbreaking to Celebrate National Community Development Week

In celebration of National Community Development Week (April 2 – 6), the City of Greenville held a groundbreaking ceremony at a home at 310 South Calhoun Street. This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Impact of the CDBG and HOME Programs,” and on Wednesday, elected officials and City staff joined representatives from the Sterling Land Trust and neighborhood residents to break ground on a new rental home in the Sterling community.

Each year, National Community Development Week highlights the impact that programs like the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) program, which are administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), have on communities throughout the United States. The HOME program, which provides grants to over 600 local participating jurisdictions to create safe, sanitary and affordable housing, provided $20,000 for the new 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath home, marking the first time the Sterling Land Trust will build a home utilizing the City’s HUD funding.

This year marks the 44th anniversary of the CDBG program, which provides grants to over 1,200 state and local governments to create neighborhood approaches that improve the physical, economic and social conditions in communities. Every $1.00 from CDBG leverages $4.11 in other funding. The HOME program is now in its 28th year, and every $1.00 from HOME leverages $4.33 in other funding. Both programs play a vital role in attracting investment into low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.
