[ARCHIVED] Council Approves Pedestrian and Road Safety Projects

City Council approved a list of projects to be funded by a $20 million state budget allocation for “Public Space Upgrades and Safety Improvements” in the City of Greenville.  

The projects, focused mainly on pedestrian and traffic safety, will address City Council priorities of Public Safety and Mobility. 

“The City will utilize the state budget allocation to support the vision of GVL2040, especially as it relates to livability, mobility and pedestrian safety enhancements,” said City Manager Shannon Lavrin. “We will improve road safety conditions on major streets and maximize the efficiency of the City’s transportation system.”  

The approved list includes: 

  • Cultural Corridor/Academy Bypass: $6 million
  • Wade Hampton Corridor Safety Improvement: $2.5 million
  • Queen Street Bridge Design - Phase 1: $130,000
  • Pedestrian Safety Action Plan: $2.5 million
  • East North Street Gateway Design: $ 370,000
  • Pendleton/Vardry Intersection: $1.3 million
  • Augusta Street Utility Undergrounding: $5.8 million
  • Stone Avenue Corridor Safety Improvements: $1.4 million  

“With this additional state funding we can accelerate important neighborhood infrastructure projects, including putting August Street utility poles underground,” said Mayor Knox White. “This will be a big step for public safety and keeping lights on for residents and businesses.”
