Proposed Changes to Update the City Floodplain Acreage

Reedy River in downtown Greenville

City engineers are proposing revisions to city flood zones to better protect property and keep residents safe.

The changes come as the result of a comprehensive, city-wide flood study completed in 2019. "This is better information, which allows us to better protect the floodplain," City engineer Paul Dow said.

Dow says the changes actually reduce the overall number of parcels in the floodplain, removing more land than adding it. Property owners of land in the floodplain are subject to additional building requirements to address potential flooding. The overwhelming majority of increases in the regulated floodplain are along the banks of the Reedy River.
