[ARCHIVED] Homicide Investigation; Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

Officer Allen Jacobs

Officer Allen Lee Jacobs was 28-years-old, married and the father of two young boys. His wife is pregnant with the couple’s daughter due to be born in July. Prior to joining the Greenville Police Department, he served in the United States Army. He was a decorated Iraq war veteran and received numerous medals and commendations for his service.

Officer Jacobs joined the Greenville Police Department in August 2011, and in August 2015, was promoted to the rank of Police Officer III. In addition to serving on the Community Response Team, he was also a member of the S.W.A.T. team.

Today at 12:20 p.m., members of the Greenville Police Department’s Crime Response Team made field contact with an adult male subject in the vicinity of Rebecca Street and Ackley Avenue. Shortly after the officers approached him, the subject began running away from them towards the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The officers pursued the subject on foot, and during the chase, the subject began firing at the officers. Officer Allen Lee Jacobs, a 4 ½ year veteran of the police department, was struck numerous times. At this time, we do not believe any of the officers returned fire.
The other officers, who were not injured, called for backup and began rendering aid to Officer Jacobs. Additional officers responded and established a perimeter in the immediate area. As the perimeter closed in, the subject - later identified as Deontea Perry Mackey - shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Jacobs was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and succumbed to those injuries.

A fund has been setup at TD bank to help the family of Officer Allen Lee Jacobs. Donations can be made at any branch by specifying that it is for Officer Allen Jacobs’ family.
