Affordable Housing Strategy
Greenville is facing an unprecedented level of growth and while there are many positive aspects of the city’s growth and success, an unintended consequence is the pressure it creates on the supply of affordable and workforce housing. This pressure can leave long-time residents and citizens who are vital to our local workforce without suitable options for housing. Almost a year ago, City Council made the issue of affordable housing a top priority and directed staff to hire a consultant to develop a strategy and offer recommendations for the creation and retention of affordable housing options. A 25-member volunteer steering committee was established to work with Charles Buki and czb, the consultant, to develop the strategy. The report findings and recommendations were presented to City Council during a work session on November 28. City Council will consider an Ordinance to adopt the Affordable Housing Report and appropriate $2 million toward its implementation at December 12 meeting. A copy of the draft report and the presentation from the November 28 work session are available on the City’s website at http://www.greenvillesc.gov/CD.
